Uninstall apps

(Updated: )

Most Mac users drag apps to the Trash to uninstall them, but that often leaves residual files scattered across your computer. Although CleanMyMac Business doesn't (yet) let Admins remotely uninstall apps from Mac computers enrolled in their Organizations, the desktop app offers a few options to help users remove apps completely—binaries, caches, preferences, and all. Leftover components can run background services, adding unnecessary load to your Mac computer's processor and memory. By fully uninstalling apps with CleanMyMac Business, you'll free up disk space and boost performance.

Remove apps via the Trash

Right after you drag an app to the Trash, CleanMyMac Business detects this, creates an uninstallation task for you to run, and shows a notification in the upper-right corner of your screen. Hover over the notification and click Uninstall to remove the app and its artifacts immediately—or click it to open CleanMyMac Business, view details, and uninstall from there.

Note

To learn about notification settings on your Mac and how to turn them on or off for CleanMyMac Business, refer to the Apple Support article.

If, for some reason, you missed the notification or have notifications turned off, follow these steps to run the task and uninstall the app:

  1. Click the CleanMyMac Business icon in the menu bar.

  2. On the Active Tasks tab, find the uninstallation task among others that need attention.

    • Click Uninstall to remove the app and its artifacts without reviewing them.

    • Click the task to view details and what's to be removed—then click Uninstall to remove the app or click Back to return to the list of tasks.

  3. To review results, go to the Completed tab and see the respective task—click it for details.

Remove apps using shortcut menu

CleanMyMac Business lets you uninstall apps using Finder's shortcut menu (also called a contextual menu). First you need to add the CleanMyMac Business action there:

  1. In System Settings, go to General > Login Items & Extensions.

  2. Scroll to Extensions, then click the info button next to File Providers.

    The File Providers dialog opens.

    Tip

CleanMyMac Business also provides you another way to quickly get to the File Providers dialog: drag an app to the Trash, open CleanMyMac Business, find the newly created uninstallation task on the Active Tasks tab, then click Add "Uninstall with CleanMyMac Business" in the task.

  3. In the dialog that opens, turn on CleanMyMac Business, then click Done.

Now right-click any app in the Applications folder and choose Uninstall with CleanMyMac Business—the app and all its artifacts will be removed.

Handle duplicate apps

Whenever you uninstall an app using CleanMyMac Business, it detects if the app has duplicates on your Mac and notifies you about that during uninstallation—in the prompt dialog that opens:

  • Click Skip to keep duplicates and remove only the "original" app.

  • Select duplicates and click Remove Selected—CleanMyMac Business will uninstall the "original" app and any selected duplicates along with their artifacts.
