Safety considerations

CleanMyMac ensures the safety of your Mac, the applications you install, and the data you work with while safeguarding your personal information. Let's explore how CleanMyMac achieves this in detail.

Your personal data is protected

We treat your data responsibly and keep it secure. Below are the key principles we follow:

  • GDPR compliance: MacPaw processes and protects your data in strict accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other relevant data protection laws.

  • Secure third-party services: When data is processed by third-party services, like payment providers, we ensure they are GDPR-compliant and meet all legal data protection requirements. Whenever possible, your data is anonymized.

CleanMyMac is notarized by Apple and available on the App Store

CleanMyMac has been notarized by Apple, confirming that it is free from malicious components and safe for distribution. Additionally, the availability of CleanMyMac on the App Store reflects its compliance with Apple software quality and security standards.

Your Mac and data are safe during cleanup

The cleanup and maintenance of your Mac are sensitive processes that require reliable software. CleanMyMac ensures accuracy, keeping your data intact while optimizing system performance.

Safety database

With years of experience, we've developed a comprehensive safety database. It contains detailed rules and exceptions tailored to various macOS versions and applications. This database is continuously updated to prevent accidental data removal and ensure a safe cleanup process.

Smart Care and smart selection

Smart Care is the core feature of CleanMyMac, launching its modules like Cleanup, Protection, and Performance. It uses intelligent algorithms and the safety database to identify unneeded, outdated, or potentially dangerous items that can be safely removed.

If you run individual modules, CleanMyMac shows the results screen with the number of items and amount of data that can be painlessly and safely removed.

By default, CleanMyMac only offers to remove automatically generated system or app-related data, ensuring no personal files are removed unless you choose to delete them.

Ignore list

While CleanMyMac safety database is regularly updated, it may not always align with your preferences. For example, you might want to retain specific files or exclude certain apps from cleanup. The ignore list allows you to specify items that shouldn't appear in scan results.

You can create ignore lists for the following modules:

  • Cleanup: System Junk and Mail Attachments categories
  • Protection: Malware Removal category
  • Applications: Uninstaller and Updater categories
  • My Clutter: Duplicates, Similar Images, and Downloads categories

To view or adjust your ignore list, open CleanMyMac Settings and go to the Ignore List tab.

Protection against malware

CleanMyMac protects your Mac from threats like viruses, spyware, and miners. It offers both a malware scanner and a real-time monitor that checks new installations, even when CleanMyMac isn't running.

Available as a standalone feature in the Protection module or as part of Smart Care, malware scanner uses open-source libraries updated weekly to detect new threats.
