Free up even more space

(Updated: )

So, you've removed several gigabytes of system junk using Smart Care or the Cleanup module, but you still need more storage?

This quick tutorial guides you through additional steps beyond junk cleanup to help you free up even more space on your Mac.

Here's what you'll do:

Before you start

This tutorial assumes you've already cleared some space by running Smart Care or using the Cleanup module to deal with system junk, mail attachments, and trash bins. Specifically, you should have:

  • Cleaned system junk
  • Removed mail clutter
  • Emptied trash folders

All set? Let's get started!

Get rid of unused apps

You likely have apps on your Mac that you no longer use, and removing them can free up valuable space. Here's how:

  1. In CleanMyMac, click Applications in the sidebar.

  2. Click Scan to begin and wait for the results.

  3. Review and uninstall unused apps:

If CleanMyMac detects unused apps, it'll notify you in a tile. Click Review in the tile or click Manage My Applications above the tiles to see the details.

Now, you see a list of apps you haven't used in over six months. Select the ones you no longer need, then click Uninstall.

Find and manage the heaviest files

Removing large and old files is another effective way to free up space. Here's how to do it:

  1. In CleanMyMac, click My Clutter in the sidebar.

  2. From the dropdown list, select the location to scan.

  3. Click Scan to begin and wait for the results.

  4. Click Review All Files, then select the Large & Old Files category.

  5. Review the files and select the ones you want to remove from your disk.

To preview a file or reveal it in Finder, right-click and choose Reveal in Finder or Quick Look.

  6. Once you've made your selections, click Remove.

Reduce the size of Time Machine snapshots

If you use Time Machine, its local snapshots can take up significant space on your Mac. Here's how to reduce their size:

  1. In CleanMyMac, click Performance in the sidebar.

  2. Click Scan to begin and wait for the results.

  3. In the respective tile, click Run.

Done! Hopefully, you've freed up enough space for what matters most to you. Use this workflow regularly to keep your Mac storage optimized.
