The Menu opens, but its elements aren't loading

(Updated: )

You may encounter an issue where the CleanMyMac Menu opens, but its elements fail to load. Let's go over this problem and the steps you can take to resolve it.

What's wrong?

The Menu is running, and its icon appears in the menu bar. However, when you click the icon, the Menu opens with empty placeholders instead of loading its elements.

How to fix it?

Ensure macOS is launching the correct version of CleanMyMac login items (see details).

Step 1. Update to the latest version of macOS.

The latest macOS updates may resolve the issue automatically. To check for updates, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen and choose System Settings.

  2. In the sidebar, click General, then click Software Update on the right-hand side.

  3. If updates are available, install them.

For detailed instructions, see Update macOS on Mac.

Once your Mac restarts after the update, open the Menu again to check if it's loading.

Step 2. Delete login item settings files if the problem persists.

If the issue continues after updating macOS, delete the files containing the settings for login items. This will force your system to rebuild the login items index.

  1. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.

  2. In the open dialog, enter the path /private/var/db/com.apple.xpc.launchd/ and press Return.

  3. In the folder that opens, delete the files with the .plist extension that include numbers like 501, 502, or 503 in their names.

Don't worry – these files only store settings for login items, and they'll be rebuilt when you restart your system.

If you're comfortable using the Terminal, you can skip the steps above and use this command: sudo rm /private/var/db/com.apple.xpc.launchd/loginitems.$(id -u).plist.

  4. Restart your Mac.

  5. Open CleanMyMac and ensure the Menu is turned on in CleanMyMac Settings.

That's it! The Menu will now launch automatically whenever you start your Mac.

What causes the issue?

macOS may sometimes "forget" the login items of recently updated apps or use outdated versions of those login items. This issue isn't unique to CleanMyMac – other apps may experience similar problems in macOS.

How does the fix work?

The solution ensures the system uses the correct version of CleanMyMac login items. By removing the record of all login items, the system rebuilds it when the Menu starts after rebooting. Login items for other apps are regenerated automatically when the system restarts.
